Trip Reports

Sept. 20 Forks to BB Dam

Published on 9/20/2010
Early morning mist covered the river, but had burned off by the time Lois G., Jack K., Mariah W., Jocelyn T. and Tracie L. launched their boats. Today's theme was Sesame Street. There were two groups of "one of these things are not like the others": Jack being the only guy and Tracie paddling the lone kayak. We had a wonderful day in the neighborhood, sighting several deer, a large honking "V" of flying Canadian geese (obviously discussing where they would be wintering in Florida), plus some very large fungi growing on a birch tree.

New signs had been posted at the entrance to the pond advising paddlers to follow the red and green buoys for the best route. Too bad they ran out before actually getting to the deep water!

Jack and Tracie failed to read the fine print on the signs which warned about sinking hazards and got out of their craft to walk through the "sandbar", almost making it but ultimately caving through to the hip. Each was able to self-rescue, although Jack got to practice his technique a second time!  (editor's note: Notice that although there is not enough water to float Jack's canoe, he has sunk to his crotch!  Don't be fooled, there is two inches of sand on top of six feet of muck)

The group met up with John H at OPA'S for an enjoyable lunch and to share the day's adventures.
