Trip Reports

August 24 Pine River Cleanup

Published on 8/24/2012

Clean-up paddle on the Pine River from Peterson to Low.

Attendees:

Fifteen hearty souls: Lois and John, Marvin Ison, Harold and Pam, Tracie, Marlene and Marv, Barb and Mike, Fred and Judy, Jocelyn, Gerry and Sue

Here is the fleet ready to attack the trash.

Weather:

Great.  Sunny, temperature was high but it was cool on the river.  The water was cold, which prevented most voluntary swims.

Amount of garbage collected:

The group harvested an enormous pile of trash bags stuffed to the limit even though this was the third clean-up paddle of the summer in this section of the river.

Objects found in the river:

Shoes of every kind but never a pair, jewelry, t-shirts, visors, rain jackets, bottles and cans, fishing rod, etc.  Several items were of interest to group members and are now in a good home.

Lots of white water with some trip members facing upstream and staying in place.  Apparently they got some help from someone named Eddie.

Unexpected events:

Lois and John found the most tasteless river souvenirs in past history.  Sue modeled them for a photo.  This photo will not be included in this trip report but trip members (see list above) could probably be bribed for a description or photo.

Fred and Mike arrived at the lunch spot after everyone else had finished eating.   This was not really unexpected.

Marlene agreed to adopt the full cans of beer and give them a good home.

Barb made a poor location decision and ended up:

1.    Sitting in her kayak pressed up against a log with a strong current preventing any movement

2.    Pressed up against the same log a minute later but upside down and stuck in the boat.

3.    Calling on some adrenaline assistance and kicking so hard in the boat that her body shot out leaving her tied shoes in the boat and still tightly tied.

Perhaps she’ll wear her PFD next trip instead of stuffing it behind the seat.  She is extremely grateful to have so many wise and competent fellow paddlers and rescuers.

Thanks to Lois and John for organizing this trip and attaching some of the photos taken by Jocelyn, Fred and John.
