Trip Reports

July 21 Power Island

Published on 7/21/2014
The trip began with a little lesson in patience while we drove up the Old Mission Peninsula, behind a 35 mph fudgie (we think).  Nevertheless, we had allotted enough time so that we could launch on time at 10 AM.  We rounded the breakwater and headed into a confused chop.  Along for the trip to Power Island were club members John & Lois, Danny, Milda, Dan and Glenn.  It was a lively ride, with the bows of our kayaks playing peek-a-boo with the waves.  For the open water crossing, it was comforting to have all six of us in one group.  At the beach on the island, we joined a modest crowd enjoying the peaceful environment.  The caretaker told us that the previous day (a Sunday), there had been well over 100 boats anchored there.

Lunch tastes so much better when you've been paddling and just had a swim!  Because of the gorgeous weather, everyone felt strong enough to continue south, west and then north, effectively circumnavigating the island.  The return trip to Bowers Harbor was much easier with the wind at our backs.  Four of us completed the afternoon with a Moomer's ice cream stop at Woodland Sweets - we had earned it!
