We will paddle the Manistee River from the CCC Bridge to The Sharon Road take out. This is a section of the Manistee River that we have not paddled before. The Guide (Canoeing Michigan Rivers) states that riffles over shallow gravel alternating with stretches of deep pools will be encountered below the CCC Bridge. Near Sharon the current increases to moderately fast with occasional rocks to avoid. We have encountered the same conditions on many paddles and I don’t think that it would be a problem with most of our members. I feel that beginning paddlers may want to avoid going on this paddle.
We will meet at the CCC Bridge on Sunset Trail just south of the CCC Bridge Campground, in time to shuttle cars at 10:00am. Bring a lunch as we will stop for a break part way through.
To get to the CCC Bridge take Boardman Road east through South Boardman. When you get to M-66 the road continues east but the name changes to Spencer Road (not indicated by Signs). After 5 miles the road turns to gravel and the name changes again to Mecum. Continue east on the gravel for 3.4 miles to Sunset Trail. Turn Right and the CCC Bridge is 2.7 miles south of Mecum Road. We will launch from the site south of the bridge.
We may be able to arrange a shuttle with Chippewa Landing, an outfitter on US-131.
