This is one of the prettiest sections of the Big Manistee, with majestic scenery on both sides. We will pass below the North Country National Scenic Trail. There is little development along the banks and the views of the hills surrounding the river should be truly spectacular. The pace of this trip will be slow, so there should be plenty of time to take in the color show and also be able to chat with fellow paddlers as we proceed downstream.
The Manistee River is almost 100 feet wide in this section, and is easily negotiated by energetic beginning paddlers as well as experienced folks. We will stop for lunch halfway through the trip, which should total about four hours.
Manistee River (US-131)
Head southeast of TC via Supply Road or M-113, and turn right (south) on US-131. About 2.5 miles south of the intersection of 113 and 131, you will approach the roadside rest area just north of the Manistee River on the east (left) side of the highway. Drive into the rest area, and follow the signs to the river access at the south end of the parking area. Please do not block the access while we are unloading boats and gear.
