We have some novice members in the TAPC, and we want to make sure they have the opportunity to paddle the Lower Platte before they venture out on more difficult rivers.  This is a great place to learn new skills and of course, experienced paddlers are welcome to join us.  Bring along a grabber, if you like!

We are going to start this trip early in the morning with the intention of being on the river before the crowds.   Paddling time will be about two hours. If you would like to bring a lunch, we can enjoy a picnic at the park after the paddle.  This trip would be an ideal introduction to river paddling.  The Lower Platte has a sandy bottom all the way, and has exceptionally clear warm water. Driving time from Traverse City is about an hour.  Note: you will need to have a vehicle permit for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Driving directions:

Platte River (Lower section)

Meet at the canoe access on Lake Michigan Road (also called M-708) about 1/4 mile off of M-22.  Do not go to Riverside Rental; that is the access on the other side of the river.  My favorite route is to take US-31 to the town of Honor, and then take Deadstream Road (M-708) between Platte Lake and Little Platte Lake until you reach M-22.  Then turn south (left) and drive about 1/2 mile to the first intersection. Turn right, and meet us at the parking area.
