This will be a leisurely trip on Lake Michigan along the shore of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, paddling the stretch between Glen Haven and Empire. We will decide which direction to go depending on the winds that day. Expect an e-mail from the trip host the night before or a phone call early that morning giving our starting point. The trip will involve a car shuttle between the two access points, and you will need a vehicle permit to park at the Dunes.
We will stop for a lunch break on the beach below the Dunes, and will wave to the tourists and their video cameras as we pass below the observation deck off of Pierce Stocking Drive. This is one of our favorite local outings - the perfect trip for the heart of the summer!
The trip will involve about 3 to 4 hours of paddling, depending on the wind and waves. Everyone must have a spray skirt and bilge pump. For safety reasons, we will expect everyone to keep within talking distance (and within 100 yards of shore) while we are paddling.
Directions to both access points are posted on this website, under Sleeping Bear Dunes.
