Join us on this delightful stretch of the Manistee. The current is swift (until we hit the Tippy Dam backwater) and there are many swimming opportunities now that summer is hitting full swing. No outfitter uses this section, so crowds are minimized for this busiest of weeks.
The nice current and mellow meanders make this a good, lazy paddle. Especially good for tandem paddlers. Bring a lunch and be prepared for some nice swim breaks.
Driving directions: Manistee River (Hodenpyl Dam)
Head south of TC on M-37 until you reach Mesick. Go west through town as M-37 joins M-115, and continue on M-115 as it crosses over the Manistee River. Do not turn south when M-37 turns again. One mile after M-37 has turned off, you will turn left (south) on Hodenpyl Dam Road (the first one after you cross the river). After about four miles, turn left on the dirt road and drive about ½ mile to the top of the Dam. If you notice the metal guardrail alongside the road and see that the road is starting to climb, you missed the turn.
