About this event
This trip is on a delightful section of the Betsie, which will give you the opportunity to practice maneuvering your boat in current. It's a perfect river for adventurous beginners who are interested in learning how to handle a boat in moving water. We will meet at Homestead Dam, and spend the morning (about 2.5 hours) winding our way under a canopy of trees on our way to Smith or Lewis Bridge. In most places, the depth of the water is 2-3 feet. although there are several great swimming holes with water that's chest deep. There is a good possibility for wildlife sightings and swim breaks.
If anyone is interested, we can reconvene for lunch after the trip.
Everyone should bring a boat, paddle, PFD, ropes to tie on the bow and stern, water bottle and a snack. Don't forget your sunhat and sunglasses with a retainer. And have a change of clothes and shoes in the vehicle so you can be nice and dry on your way home.
Driving Directions to Homestead Dam
:
Head to Benzonia via US-31. Just south of town and the Ben Franklin shopping plaza, turn east onto Love Road. Drive one mile and then turn south onto Dam Road for ½ mile. The access is at the river; you can’t miss it.
