Trip Reports

May 25 Sturgeon Thrillseeker with 2 new members

Published on 5/25/2010
"Jack" Kurtz & Mike Connell are new club members, but experienced Sturgeon paddlers. Barb & Mike Rodenberg had never paddled the Strugeon, but were looking forward to the challenge of a new river Up North. And, Ann Beaujean fell in love with the Sturgeon on her first trip last month when 3 TAPC members did reconnaisance with me.

It was in the mid-80s when we left Wolverine at 11AM, but as we sailed down the river among the cedar swamp "Tunnel of Trees", we enjoyed some shade, gliding over downed trees, sweeping around the logjams on the bends, and surfing the riffles, instilling confidence in Barb as we progressed into the faster, more challenging stretch.

For most of the trip, Jack was out ahead on his own, since he paddles the river frequently solo, while the rest of us enjoyed the comraderie among new friends. At the Rondo access, Ann took the first plunge into the river, with Sara & Barb following her in for a refreshing dip before lunch. By the time we arrived at our Fisher Woods take-out, it was 92-degrees, but we didn't want our journey to end, it had been such a fun trip together!

P.S. I won't be doing this often, but I towed my trailer all the way there, just for the shuttle, even though it was not needed to accomodate boats for the trip, so came in handy for those who came along, and less expensive than hiring a shuttle.
