About this event

This is a lovely stretch of river that flows through the Mason Tract, a sanctuary that has been donated to the state and is set aside as a natural area. Paddlers of all levels will enjoy a delightful outing on this scenic stream.  The water is fairly shallow (with a sand bottom).  Paddling time is about 4 hours.  Contact the trip host if you have questions before you register.

We will have a leisurely paddle from Steckert Bridge to Smith Bridge, including a lunch stop along the way (bring something to sit on at lunchtime).  If time permits, we may stop at the site of Durant’s Castle, as well as the open air chapel alongside the river.  The travel time from Traverse City is about an hour and a half, but it's worth it!

The trip will begin at Steckert Bridge, which is about 100 yards north of Paddle Brave Campground and Canoes.  We may be using them to help with the shuttle, but the access to the river is easier at the DNR landing.  See driving directions on our website; go to South Branch of the AuSable (Paddle Brave)
