* Saturday, September 22, 2018 8 Annual Upper Manistee River Cleanup Combined BRCS / Kingsley HS - ODAC This little group of 7 of us met at the BK in Kalkaska for breakfast. We decided to stick togehter this year and just paddle from ShelHaven Livery to The Tree Farm. That's usually a 2.5 hour float but today it was 4 hours. The river was higher from recent rains but not particularly faster. It was cool, with little to no wind today which was much better than yesterday with its 40+mph gusts. The girls needed to be home for a Home Coming Dance, so we didn't tarry. Kaitlin and Marlana worked extremely well together and showed us all exactly how to stab cans in the middle of the river. Our new round 5 pronged spears worked well but are not as sturdy as the 4 pronged flat ones. All together, we took out 40 or more cans from the river bottom. Terry was the trash queen once again, getting 4 bags out singlehandedly. We got a tire, 2 chairs and lots of bottles and plastic out of this section. We all had a great time and the girls got home in time for their party. It doesn't get any better than that.
