About this event
Join us as we do citizen science collecting insects and other macroinvertebrates on the Pine River at three locations; Silver Creek, Elm Flats, and Peterson Bridge.
Meet at 9 am at the Silver Creek Canoe Launch. If there is over 300 cfs of flow on this date, the collection will be cancelled.
This is the 5th year of this project and we are now obtaining some good data such as a profile of sensitive families found in the Pine where we are starting to show very good results, thanks to some dedicated collectors. The data we generate goes into the Michigan Clean Water Corps database.
There are several things we need to do, collecting in the river (fun), sorting and preserving the crawlies you collect (interesting) and helping get the insects from the collectors to the sorting table (meh . . . but necessary).
Here is what you see for a distribution in sensitivity of insects collected at Elm Flats where there is an indication of possible, slight, organic contamination. Only more data will determine whether it is organic matter released by vegetation in the fall, or an actual, persistent pollution.
