This outing is a leisurely 2-way shoreline paddle on East Bay from Haserot Beach Park to the tip of the Old Mission Peninsula. Now that the water levels in Lake Michigan are higher, it's a great time to return to one of our favorite outings.
We plan to launch at 10:45 AM and head north to the tip of the peninsula. I have arranged a special tour of the lighthouse for our group. Then we will eat our lunch (so bring one!) at the lighthouse park.
It's about an hour each way, depending on the wind and the abilities of the group. For safety reasons, your kayak must have sealed bulkheads or flotation in BOTH the front and back of your boat. Also for safety AND fun, we would like everyone to keep within talking distance while we are on the water, to assure that any power boats or jet skis will see us as a group.
With favorable conditions, we may be able to view the wreckage of the Schooner Metropolis while we paddle along the northeast side of the peninsula. This outing is normally accomplished in smooth water due to the prevailing winds from the west, but conditions can change.
Directions to the park:
From TC, take M-37 north along the Old Mission Peninsula. About 15 miles north of Front Street, turn right (east) on Swaney Road, and drive about one mile to Haserot Beach. Another option is to turn east on Old Mission Road, go east and then north past the Old Mission General Store, and then at the T-intersection, turn east again to get to the park.
