May 8 - S Br AuSable hike & paddle

Sara Cockrell  | Published on 5/8/2016

A great day for my first hike & paddle for the season, 10 miles downstream from Chase Bridge to Smith Bridge on the S Branch of the AuSable in < 3 hrs, then hike 10 miles back on the Mason Tract in < 4 hrs. Afterwards, all except Bert enjoyed pizza at Paddle Brew in Grayling. Unfortunately, he bashed his forehead on a low-hanging tree branch 10 mins from the finish & needed 3 stitches. The river was high & fast, but no marsh marigold yet, and only a few spring wildflowers along the trail. Not many mid-70 yr old grandmothers celebrate Mother's Day on an all-day, 20-mile hike & paddle, but Jocelyn is amazing!!! Thanks to Bryce, Paula, Henry, Bert & Jocelyn for joining me today & helping with the shuttle. Report by Sara Cockrell
